Contributes to the development and implementation of a communication strategy to document childrens and womens issues in Pakistan. Develops and implements short-, medium- and longer-term media strategies and plans to increase coverage of UNICEF, its work and key issues by both Pakistani and international media. Monitors and evaluates its impact.
In liaison with the UNICEF Division of Communication (DOC), Private Fundraising and Partnerships (PFP) Division, Regional Office in South Asia (ROSA), and with country office counterparts, identifies and researches story and media opportunities and develops media materials (text, photos, video, etc) on key childrens issues and the current situation, in the event of an emergency. Keeps abreast of issues of importance to children and UNICEF.
Promotes and facilitates interview opportunities with UNICEF officials and experts. Coordinates/arranges for live or recorded interviews with spokespersons; serve as UNICEF spokesperson as required.
Develops new media relationships and strengthens existing contacts with international and national media and pitches stories in line with international priorities as directed by DOC and ROSA.
Drafts and issues press releases, Q&As and key messages and organizes press briefings, as needed. Utilizes both web-based and traditional media when appropriate to generate and maintain public interest in issues of relevance on children and women; tells the story of UNICEF's cooperation to a wider audience.
Leads/organizes media field visits to project sites in flood- or earthquake-affected areas, or elsewhere in Pakistan, if needed, in coordination with UNICEF HQ (PFP & DOC), ROSA and CO communications teams.
Manages the process for evaluating media coverage, including managing media monitoring vendors, and determining follow-up actions required and issue management for negative press. Flags any potential emerging issues that may hamper UNICEF image or positioning.
Takes responsibility for dealing with unanticipated media queries and initiatives as appropriate.
Develops systems for the Country Office to manage media relations more effectively.
Leads or supports media work on other issues or programme areas as determined by the Chief of Communications or DOC or ROSA.
