Job Description

Background

The Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are jointly organizing the workshop on 8-9 June 2009. The objective is to share the experience they have gathered over the past two years while implementing the Livelihoods Rehabilitation Strategy in its turn placing this within a regional and global setting. The workshop is also organized for sharing experience, knowledge and ideas on the way forward for the ERRA Livelihoods Rehabilitation approach. With major components of the project focusing on (i) community-based rehabilitation of livelihoods and (ii) placing these also within a watershed and natural resource management context, presentations and group work will be organized around these themes.

The focus of the first day will be on the sharing of project experience and relating this to the regional and global context. For this day, participants will be coming from Government departments, donors, UN agencies and NGOs as well as the partners closely involved with the implementation of the strategy. For the second day, the focus will be on consolidating project related experience and developing work plans for the remaining period of the implementation of the strategy. The participants of the second day will be limited to the people directly involved with the implementation.

Scope of work

The Task Manager will work closely with the workshop task force. S/he will be a core member of the task force, and will be responsible for managing the preparations and delivery of the international workshop.

The Task Manager will be responsible for the following:

- Take a leading role in organizing the logistics of the event such as the registration process, setting up the venue prior to the session, ensuring multi-media and sound systems are ready for use, etc

- Time management of the sessions in the two-day workshop

- Working language to be English, however, for the community members and international colleagues a very brief summary translation of the session proceedings required from Urdu to English and vice versa

- Giving brief introductions of individual presenters and acting as a conduit in-between sessions

- Documenting the proceedings of the various sessions

- Coordinating the tea and lunch breaks with ERRA and FAO staff dedicated for the task

- Compile the proceedings of the session, redraft them in a logical flow to allow for preliminary release of the proceedings

Required Skills

QUALIFICATIONS

Excellent project management skills and demonstrated experience in organizing high-level international events.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and experience working with a variety of stakeholders, including senior government officials and private sector representatives.

Fluency in English and Urdu (both speaking and writing)
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently with limited supervision.

Experience working in a multicultural team and proven ability to build relationships with project partners.

Masters degree in Development Studies, International Affairs, Communications or other relevant fields preferably with a background in livelihoods and natural resource management
5+ years relevant professional work experience

EXPECTED SCOPE AND DURATION OF ASSIGNMENT

The consultant will be hired for 7 days during the period of 24 May to 12 June 2009. During this period the consultant would be expected to work full-time on this assignment from 8-11 June and 3 calendar days in two weeks prior to the workshop.

The position will be Islamabad based that may possibly involve a two-day trip to Muzaffarabad/Abbottabad
